A crown (or cap) is a covering that fully encases a tooth, restoring its original shape and size. Crowns are designed to protect and strengthen tooth structure that cannot be adequately repaired with fillings or other restorations.

While there are various types of crowns, porcelain crowns are the most popular choice due to their ability to closely resemble natural teeth. They are highly durable and can last many years, although, like most dental restorations, they may eventually need replacement. Porcelain crowns are customized to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth, providing you with a natural-looking, long-lasting smile.

What Does Getting a Crown Involve?

The crown procedure typically requires two appointments. During your first visit, your dentist will take precise molds (impressions) that will be used to create your custom crown. A temporary crown will also be made and placed on your tooth, remaining in place for about two weeks while your permanent crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory.

With the tooth numbed, the dentist will prepare it by removing any decay and shaping the surface to ensure a proper fit for the crown. After preparing the tooth, your temporary crown will be secured with temporary cement, and your bite will be checked for accuracy.

At your second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and the new crown will be carefully placed to ensure proper spacing and bite alignment.

You will receive care instructions following the procedure and will be encouraged to schedule regular dental visits to monitor your new crown.
