Fluoride is the most effective agent available for preventing tooth decay. This natural mineral is found in varying amounts in nearly all foods and water supplies. For over 50 years, the benefits of fluoride have been well-established and supported by numerous health and professional organizations.

Fluoride functions in two main ways:
- Topical Fluoride: This strengthens teeth that have already erupted by penetrating the outer layer of tooth enamel, enhancing their resistance to decay. We can obtain topical fluoride through dental products like toothpaste, mouth rinses, and gels. Dental professionals generally recommend that children receive a professional fluoride application twice a year during check-ups.
- Systemic Fluoride: This strengthens both erupted teeth and those still developing beneath the gums. Systemic fluoride is found in most foods and community water supplies. It can also be provided as supplements in drop or gel form, which can be prescribed by your dentist or physician. Fluoride drops are often recommended for infants, while tablets are suited for children through their teenage years. It’s important to monitor fluoride intake in children, as excessive consumption during tooth development can lead to fluorosis, which appears as white spots on the teeth.
While most people receive sufficient fluoride through diet and water, additional measures may be necessary in certain cases. Your dentist or dental hygienist might recommend home and/or professional fluoride treatments for the following reasons:
- Deep pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of teeth
- Exposed and sensitive root surfaces
- Poor oral hygiene habits
- Frequent consumption of sugary and carbohydrate-rich foods
- Insufficient fluoride exposure
- Low saliva flow due to medical conditions or treatments
- Recent history of dental decay
Important Reminder
Fluoride alone will not prevent tooth decay! It is essential to brush at least twice a day, floss regularly, maintain a balanced diet, limit sugary snacks, and visit your dentist consistently.
