The Importance of Dental Radiographs (X-rays)

Dental radiographs, commonly known as x-rays, are essential tools for preventive care and accurate diagnosis. They provide valuable insights that are not visible during a regular dental examination, allowing dentists and dental hygienists to safely detect hidden dental issues and create effective treatment plans. Without x-rays, potential problems could remain undetected.

What Can Dental X-rays Reveal?

Dental x-rays can uncover various issues, including:

  • Abscesses or cysts
  • Bone loss
  • Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors
  • Decay between teeth
  • Developmental abnormalities
  • Poor tooth and root positions
  • Problems inside a tooth or below the gum line

Detecting and addressing dental issues early can save you time, money, and discomfort, while also preserving your teeth.

Are Dental X-rays Safe?

All of us are exposed to natural radiation from our environment. The radiation exposure from a full mouth series of x-rays is roughly equivalent to what a person receives in a single day from natural sources.

Dental x-rays involve a low level of radiation and are considered safe. Dentists take necessary precautions to minimize radiation exposure, such as using lead apron shields and modern, fast film that reduces exposure time for each x-ray.

How Often Should You Get Dental X-rays?

The frequency of dental x-rays depends on your individual dental health needs. Your dentist and dental hygienist will recommend x-rays based on:

  • Your medical and dental history
  • Your dental exam results
  • Any signs or symptoms present
  • Age considerations
  • Risk for dental disease

For new patients, a full mouth series of dental x-rays is typically recommended. This series is usually valid for three to five years. Bite-wing x-rays (which show the top and bottom teeth together) are often taken during regular check-ups, generally once or twice a year, to detect any new dental issues.
