Dentures – Your Questions Answered

How long can I expect my dentures to last?

When your dentures are first fitted, they are custom-made to fit exactly within your mouth. However, as time passes, the contours of your gums and jawbone change. These changes mean that your dentures may eventually become uncomfortable, even to the point of causing blisters or sores in your mouth.

To prevent this discomfort, be sure to visit your dentist regularly and have your dentures evaluated at the same time your dentist checks your gums and any remaining teeth for overall health. Because of regular wear and tear as well as natural changes in your mouth, most dentures will need to be adjusted or partially remade about every five to seven years.

What are immediate dentures and how are they different from other dentures?

Immediate dentures are placed in the mouth immediately after teeth are extracted in the dental office. Although they are custom made to fit your mouth, the healing process after extraction will naturally change the contours of the gums. Immediate dentures must be adjusted after the healing process is complete in order to properly fit these new contours in the mouth.

Do I have to use a denture adhesive?

Properly fitted dentures might not require a denture adhesive to keep them secure. However, an adhesive can provide additional confidence that your dentures will not shift, move or fall out. Be sure to use an adhesive recommended by your dentist.

How long before I get used to my new dentures?

Even the most comfortable of dentures require an adjustment period. Dentures feel different from your natural teeth, and you will need to get used to the new sensations. It is advisable to eat soft or liquid foods for the first few days as you become accustomed to chewing. Speaking with dentures also takes some practice, but within a few weeks the dentures will feel like a natural part of your mouth.
